1. Sarah Jane Finn was charged with assault of a police office.

2. Finn pushed Acting Superintendent Steven Cooper at the Melbourne Cup in 2015. The police officer fell backwards into a conifer. Footage of the incident went viral on the Internet.

3. Finn appeared in the Magistrates’ Court.

4. Finn was fined $800, and costs of $117 (plus $150 to repair the broken glasses of the police officer).

5. The crime referred to in this case study is a summary offence because it is a minor (less serious) criminal offence that can be heard in a Magistrates’ Court without a jury.
